The impact of the risk factors on the independent living skills of youth after discharge from residential child welfare institutions: Focusing on the mediating effects of protective factors

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to verify structural model including risk and protective factors related to independent living skills of youth after discharge from out-of-home care. This study utilized the data collected from the Support Center for Children¡¯s Independent Living supported by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. For this study, 640 youths who left within 5 years from out-of-home care have been interviewed. The data was analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results of this study were as follows: Aggression directly affected sense of community and anxiety¡¤depression had a direct effect on self-esteem, social support, and sense of community. Self-esteem, social support, and sense of community had direct effects on independent living skills. Separate mediation analysis indicated that both self-esteem and social support mediated the effect of anxiety¡¤depression on independent living skills. Sense of community had a significant mediation effect on aggression and anxiety¡¤depression. Based on the results, this study suggested social welfare policy and practice implications for a better independent living of youth after discharge from out-of-home care.
